Infielder Cayla Jones of Northwestern State and right-handed pitcher Kiana Pogroszewski of Bossier Parish Community College are the recipients of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association softball player awards for May 3-9, the LSWA announced Monday.

Jones was named the LSWA Hitter of the Week, and Pogroszewski was chosen Pitcher of the Week.

The awards are based on nominations and voting by the state's college softball publicists, who are not permitted to vote for their own players. Athletes from four- and two-year colleges are eligible for the awards.  

About Cayla Jones:
• Senior from Missouri City, Texas, and a graduate of Elkins High School.
• Week: Hit .667 (6-for-9) with 10 RBIs, four runs, two doubles, one triple, one home run and one sacrifice fly during the Lady Demons' 2-1 week.
• Hit her second grand slam of the season to break a tie at 4 and lift Northwestern State to a 9-4 home victory Friday against Southeastern Louisiana in the opener of a Southland Conference doubleheader and three-game series.
• Jones hit a bases-loaded triple in the second game Friday, a 13-5 victory.
• Jones won Southland Hitter of the Week for this same period.
• Season: Hitting .309 (34-for-110) in 36 games with seven doubles, one triple, four home runs, 24 RBIs, 10-of-11 stolen bases, on-base .418, slugging .500, 22 runs . . . Plays second base.
• Northwestern State was 22-20 overall, 16-11 in the Southland Conference through Sunday and in fourth place out of 12 teams.
• Next for Northwestern State: 6:30 p.m. Tuesday against Southeastern Louisiana or Abilene Christian in the Southland tournament at Hammond, La.

About Kiana Pogroszewski:
• Freshman right-handed pitcher from Ephraim, Utah, and a graduate of Manti High School.
• Week: Pitched a five-inning complete-game shutout at Northeast Texas Community College in the first game of a doubleheader . . . Pogroszewski allowed three hits and struck out five in the Lady Cavaliers' 9-0 run-rule victory.
• Season: 16-1 record, 2.52 ERA, 100 innings, 92 strikeouts, 33 walks.
• Bossier Parish was 44-6 through Sunday -- 2-0 this past week -- and ranked eighth in NJCAA Division I.
• Next for Bossier Parish: 5 p.m. Friday (opponent TBA) in the NJCAA Region 14 East Tournament at Tyler, Texas.
