Bossier Parish's Uchenna Jong Loy and Mabry Smith win LSWA softball weekly awards

Utility player Uchenna Jong Loy and right-handed pitcher Mabry Smith, both of Bossier Parish Community College, are the recipients of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association softball player awards for April 19-25, the LSWA announced Monday.

Jong Loy was voted the LSWA Hitter of the Week, and Smith was chosen Pitcher of the Week.

The awards are based on nominations and voting by the state's college softball publicists, who are not permitted to vote for their own players. Athletes from four- and two-year colleges are eligible for the awards. 

 About Uchenna Jong Loy:

• Sophomore from Amsterdam, Netherlands, and a graduate of Sportacademie.

• Week: Hit .600 (12-for-20) with six RBIs, nine runs, three home runs and three walks during the Lady Cavaliers' 6-0 week, which included a doubleheader sweep of nationally ranked LSU-Eunice.

• Hit safely in each of the six games and extended her hitting streak to eight games.

• Season: Hitting .529 (74-for-140) in 46 games with 16 doubles, 23 home runs, 73 RBIs, on-base .595, slugging 1.136, 60 runs . . . Jong Loy leads the NJCAA in home runs this season.

• Bossier Parish was 40-6 overall through Sunday with a No. 9 national ranking.

• Next for Bossier Parish: 1 p.m. doubleheader Friday at Northeast Texas Community College in Mount Pleasant.

 

About Mabry Smith:

• Sophomore right-handed pitcher from Texarkana, Texas, and a graduate of Texas High School.

• Week: 14 innings, 2-0 record, 1 save, 0.50 ERA . . . six hits, one run, one earned run, four walks, 21 strikeouts, three games, two complete games.

• Pitched a seven-inning one-hitter with 14 strikeouts in a 6-0 victory against nationally ranked LSU-Eunice.

• Season: 8-1 record, one save, 0.97 ERA . . . 16 games, eight starts, five complete games, 84 strikeouts, 31 hits and 19 walks in 57 2/3 innings.

• Bossier Parish was 40-6 overall through Sunday with a No. 9 national ranking.

• Next for Bossier Parish: 1 p.m. doubleheader Friday at Northeast Texas Community College in Mount Pleasant.
