Eight-run fourth inning propels Bossier Parish to 10-2 run-rule win over Paris Junior College

Eight-run fourth inning propels Bossier Parish to 10-2 run-rule win over Paris Junior College

BOSSIER CITY - Hailey Pence's inside-the-park grand slam home run capped an eight-run, fourth inning which propelled the Bossier Parish Community College Lady Cavaliers to a 10-2 run-run win over the Paris Junior College Lady Dragons Saturday at the BPCC Softball Field.

Pence, a freshman from Dayton, Texas, blasted the first pitch she saw from reliever Brisa Zapata off the top of the left field fence. Attempting to make a play on the ball, Lady Dragons left fielder Meaghan Peterson crashed into the fence and was slow to get up. This allowed Pence to race around the bases and touch home plate with the eventual game-winning run as well as completing one of the rarest feats in softball.

Lost in all of the drama and excitement of Pence's exploits was the fact that the bottom of the fourth inning started with the game tied at two. The first three Lady Cavaliers were hit by pitches, including Pence who led off the frame. After Pence was caught stealing home, Dorrie Cormier singled home Kelsie Ward to give BPCC a 3-2 lead. Rebecca Shepherd would draw a bases loaded walk which plated Uchenna Jong Loy, who reached on a walk. Cormier would score on Abi Cole's grounder which was misplayed by PJC first baseman Jessie Smith. Another bases-loaded walk scored Butler, before Pence would clear the bases with the grand slam, her only hit of the game.

Cormier earned the victory for the Lady Cavaliers, her third of the year, as she went five innings, allowing two runs on three hits, striking out seven and walking zero.

The BPCC win snapped a four-game losing skid for the Lady Cavaliers as they improved to 22-9 on the year and 2-5 in Region XIV play.
