
BOSSIER CITY, LA. - Bossier Parish Community College basketball standout Decari Markray was killed in a car accident Satruday morning in Bossier City, LA.
Markray, 20, was a member of head coach J.A. Anglin's first recruiting class at BPCC. He was one of the most well-liked students on the BPCC campus. The Doyline, Louisiana native was working towards a Criminal Justice degree at BPCC.
"As coaches, we aren't supposed to have favorites," BPCC head coach J.A. Anglin said. "I will never be afraid to admit that Decari Markray was one of my all-time favorties. His energy, effort, and attitude never wavered no matter the circumstances. Decari answered the bell every day and gave our program everything he had. He was loved and respected by coaches, teammates, and administrators. Decari was a good basketball player, but he was an even better person. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time."
As a freshman, the 6-foot-4 swingman made 19 appearances for the Cavaliers in the 2020-21 season. He finished last season on a high note, playing his best game statistically with 9 points and 7 rebounds against Victoria College in the Region XIV Tournament in Jacksonville, Texas.
The former Doyline Panther played one of his best games in a BPCC uniform on the road in the Cavalier's upset of #14 ranked Panola College. Markray finished the game with 8 points and 4 rebounds in their 76-74 victory. He was known for his timely scoring and rebounding where he always seemed to be in the right place at the right time.
As a senior at Doyline High School, Markray guided the Pathers to a 33-2 record and their first State Championship since 1967. Over a two-game span at Burton Coliseum in Lake Charles, Louisiana, he registered 55 points and grabbed 41 rebounds. In the Class B State Championship game against Simsboro High School, Markray put on a show that will go down as one of the best single-game performances in Louisiana High School State finals history. The senior willed his team to an 85-83 overtime victory with 25 points and 26 rebounds. He was selected MVP of the Class B State Championship game, All-State, All-Parish, and All-District. Markray also played baseball and ran track at Doyline High School.
A balloon release to honor Decari Markray is scheduled for 5pm at Doyline High School in Doyline, Louisiana Thrusday October 7th. Visitation will be held from 11am to 5pm at Jerusalem Baptist Church in Haughton, Louisiana Friday October 8th. Decari Markray's funeral will be help at First Baptist Church of Haughton, Louisiana on Saturday October 9th at 11am. Doors will open at 10am.
