Panola defeats Bossier Parish 82-62 in season opener

BOSSIER CITY, La. - The Panola College Ponies defeated the Bossier Parish Community College Cavaliers 82-62 Wednesday night in the NJCAA Region XIV opener for both teams. The Ponies took advantage of a cold shooting night by the Cavaliers to spoil the debut of BPCC head coach J.A. Anglin.

Panola never trailed in the game, and maintained a double-digit lead througout most of the second half. Early on, BPCC tied the game at 13 before Panola would go on a 17-4 run to take command. Numerous times in the second half BPCC would trim the Panola lead to 13, but each time the Ponies would respond.

Panola was led by Cody Deen, who scored a game-high 23 points. A Bossier City native and former Bossier High Bearkat, Deen was 8-for-13 from the field, including hitting  4-of-7 three-pointers, to lead all scorers. The 5'9" guard also pulled down six rebounds. Panola guards Josh Miller and Isaac Jackson were the only other Ponies to reach double figures with 17 and 15 points, respectively.

Despite a dismal night shooting, just 37 percent (22-58), BPCC did have three players reach double figures. Guard Avery Martinez led the Cavaliers with 15 points, while Paul King had 14 and Fahmmi Mamo added 12.

The Cavaliers return to action on Saturday, Jan. 23, when they travel to Port Arthur, Texas to take on the Lamar State College Seahawks. Panola has its home opener on Saturday against Navarro College, who defeated Coastal Bend College 90-65 on Wednesday in its opener.
