Cavaliers give up lead late, lose 63-59 to Jacksonville

BOSSIER CITY - Jacksonville's Joel Polius sank two free throws with 52 seconds remaining which gave the visiting Jaguars a 60-59 lead, their first in over 14 minutes. After a Bossier Parish miss, Jacksonville's Vydal Bradford would hit a three-pointer from the left corner with six seconds left to put the Jags up for good 63-59.

Polius' free throws came after a controversial call by the officials. Initially, Polius was called for charging after running over BPCC's Jason Holliday in the lane. One official called a charge on Polius, but his call was overruled by another official, who ruled Holliday's feet were inside the "no charge" arc in the lane.

The Cavaliers couldn't overcome their worst shooting night of the season, connecting on just 21 of 63 shots from the field, including an abysmal 8-of-29 from beyond the arc. BPCC came into the game as the second best team free throw shooting team in NJCAA Division I. However, the Cavaliers shot just 60 (9-of-15) percent from the free throw line in this game, well below their normal 77.5 percent.

Jacksonville had just two players reach double figures, Jordan Mitchell with 13 points and Akili Vining with 10. Holliday, who overcame a lacerated hand and dislocated finger, led the Cavaliers with 17 points, while Erie Olonade added 11 and Eric Parrish chipped in 10, well below his 21-point average.

With the win Jacksonville improves to 11-7 overall and 2-4 in Region XIV play, while the loss drops BPCC to 14-2 and 4-2 in the region. The loss was the Cavaliers second loss this week, both coming at home. The Cavaliers return to action on Jan. 16 when they travel to Corsicana, Texas to take on division leading Navarro College.
