CARTHAGE, Texas - Sophomore pitcher Zachary St. Pierre fanned 14 batters and a late-inning rally propelled the Bossier Parish Community College Cavaliers to an 8-2 win over the Panola College Ponies at Jim Reeves Memorial Field here Thursday night.
St. Pierre scattered seven hits and allowed just two runs over eight innings to earn his second win of the season. Daniel Shafer tossed a scoreless ninth, striking out two Ponies to run the BPCC pitching staff's total to 16 strikeouts in the game.
With the game tied at one in the top of the eighth, BPCC got three consecutive singles from Mason Hammonds, Garrett Felix and Gavin Baird to start the inning. Gabriel Cabrera's sacrifice fly score Hammonds to give the Cavaliers a 2-1 lead. BPCC added another run when Felix scored on a fielder's choice.
After Panola cut the BPCC lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth, BPCC would put the game away with five runs in the ninth. Hammonds and Baird came through with RBI singles, but the big blow was delivered by Andrew Mills, who blasted his fourth home run of the season.
With the win, BPCC improves to 8-11 overall and 5-6 in Region XIV, while the loss drops Panola to 11-8 overall and 4-7 in region play. The two teams will meet again on Sat., March 20 in a doubleheader at the BPCC Baseball Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
