Cavaliers survive Centenary 4-3 behind the pitching of Branon Pope

SHREVEPORT, La. - The Bossier Parish Community College Cavaliers got seven and a third strong innings of relief work from Branon Pope and scored two runs late to defeat Centenary College's Junior Varsity 4-3 here Monday at Shehee Stadium.

Pope, a freshman from Lafayette, La., came on in relief of starter Connwe Martin with two outs in the bottom of the second inning. Pope allowed just four hits and one run while striking out seven and walking one to earn the victory, his fourth of the season.

With the game tied at three in the top of the eighth, BPCC started the inning with three straight singles, inlcuding two bunt base hits. After a Layne McLin pop out, second baseman Kanin Dodge lifted a sacrifice fly to right field which scored Zacharay Lee with the go-ahead run.

In the bottom of the ninth, BPCC catcher Ty Dragos was instrumental in helping preserve the win for the Cavaliers. Dragos threw out two runners trying to steal second, including pinch-runner Brandon Griffin, for the final out of the game.

Trailing 3-2 with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, BPCC centier field Kyle Jones tied the game with a solo blast over the left field wall. Jones' home run, his third of the season, came off of Centenary reliver Will Kappler, who had held the Cavaliers scoreless for four innings until that point. 

The Cavaliers have now won four straight games and have upped their record to 23-13. BPCC returns to Region XIV play on Thursday, Apr. 11 when the Cavaliers travel to Lufkin, Texas to battle the Angelina College Roadrunners. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Roadrunner Baseball Field.
